Who are you writing for?

I’ve wanted to be a writer for some time… and many people have asked during the past few years, one of my most dreaded questions…

“So, you wanna be a writer, huh?”

“Yep, yep, I do.”

“So then, who’s your target market? Who’s gonna read your book?”

It’s at this point that I usually make some broad, vague statement about my marketing strategy, including which segment of the population would benefit from the words I am writing, including demographic background, socio-economic standing and fast-food restaurant preferences. Actually, fact of the matter is… i don’t know whom I’m writing for. It could be you, it could be your grandma… It could be anyone.

In truth, I wish I didn’t have to answer this question, specifically with the answer that is being fished for… that is, the marketing segmentation strategy on said work. I would much rather just write because there are words on my heart that must be written out. In this vein my pen becomes the prayer beads and the keyboard becomes my confessional booth, as my words more times than not my personal prayers to God. Conversations filled with angst, stress, and worry; infused with joy, encouragement and praise, a veritable explosion of emotion amidst the motion of my day-to-day life.

And so… it is God whom I am writing for, as the blood on the page can attest, tears, fears and laughter fill the columns as I write out my witness to this life, in the hopes that some others out “there” are encouraged toward a life of transparency and blessed to find a voice indistinguishable from their own.
