On the cusp of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to pontificate on the misguidings of anticipation.
Anticipation, what a great description of the beginning of love. As one “falls in love,” a feeling begins to sprout in one’s heart. This sprout of anticipation leads one to dream, to project, to think about the future; the future together, the future of love, the future of perfection.
Why is that in anticipating, we build-up a story that is unrealistic? A future that is too tidy, too beautiful, too perfect… I want to change that. Not anticipation but the unrealistic projection of perfection. I want to anticipate the unknown, look forward to learning more about the other person and in doing so learn more about me. Healthy anticipation is good – its exciting, and motivating, but be weary of this noxious form of anticipation that sets up unrealistic pictures of future utopia.
Let us think of life as a tree – as the sprout of love begins to grow and anticipation begins to form roots in your heart, be careful not to let the dream project a perfect fruit-filled tree. Instead let it fuel the formation of your own story – a growing tree that is perfected in you.
