deep quotes…

Here are some deep thoughts by C.S. Lewis out of his book, “The Problem with Pain

1. “I do not think I should value much the love of a friend who cared only for my happiness and did not object to my becoming dishonest.” – pg 42

2. “God is goodness. He can give good, but cannot need or get it.” – pg 42

3. “We are not merely imperfect creatures who must be improve: we are as Newman said, rebels who must lay down our arms.” pg 91

4. “When we act from God in Ourselves – we are collaborators in, or live instruments of, creation.” – pg 102

My thoughts (followed by yours):

1. Happiness is fleeting and completely dependent on outside circumstances. Instead of seeking happiness, we should ask that our joy be made complete – meaning that through any circumstance, either happy or sad, our hope for good is not diminished.

2. But yet he wants good from us… paradox?

3. Relating to the theological supposition of the ‘total depravity of man’ – it is not merely the imperfection that pain and suffering refines in us, it is also the rebellion in our hearts that it quiets.

4. Love this idea… we are collaborators within creation. The strings we pluck in our daily doings add to the symphony that is found in life with God.

    2. Thoughts like this fascinate me…I do think since God is the creator of goodness and completely embodies it, any goodness we have to offer came from Him. So it seems reasonable to me that He cannot stand in any need of it.

    4. I think part of being made in the image of God does mean that we have the need and the drive to be creators…it's inspiring and really freeing.

    2. He does not want good from us but rather for us. Thus the "guidelines" he gives us are for our own benefit and reflect the natural order of things.
