With the advice of K-Harmony and others I would like to propose the following additions to the Ladder Theory:
1. Josh Harris Syndrome or JHS
2. Christian Smutitis
1. JHS – through the influence of Joshua Harris’ work “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” many a Christian folk have become affected by JH syndrome, though the female gender seems to be afflicted the most. Side affects of this debilitating disorder include but are not limited to:
- emotional isolation -no deep friendships with any of the opposite sex.
- perfect man ideology – see Christian Smutitis
- home schoolitis – the prevalence of looking like someone who was home schooled, and/or lacking certain social skills
2. Christian Smutitis – This horrific disorder has been brought on by the books by author Francine Rivers, specifically “Redeeming Love.” It displays itself in many ways including:
- perfect man ideology – the ideology that there is a perfect man out there for every woman, and in order to “capture” said man is to wait for him to sweep them off their feet with his glistening pectorals and long flowing locks.
- only dating the person their going to marry – a tag along to “perfect man syndrome” this side effects causes many to not date1 great people because of one lackluster characteristic.
—————————
1. date – an activity two people share together with the intention of getting to know each other better on a potentially romantic level.

Redeeming Love is an incredibly awesome book. Have you ever read it? The “Perfect Man Ideology” and “only dating who you are going to marry” definitely do not exist in that. It is a quasi modern (quasi in that it takes place during the goldrush) retelling of the story of Hosea and God’s love for His whore of a people. It is really rather moving and one I’m defnitely better for having read it.
Now, I do refuse to read any of her other books as they sound kinda like Christian soft porn but I do take exception with the inclusion of Redeeming Love. Other than that, good points!
Quick question…
Exactly what does “looking like someone who was homeshooled” mean?
no offense to those who have been home schooled in the past (my sister being a great example) who have come out of this as normal as the rest of us. Having said this I think we can all agree we have met the random home schooled kid that was just a little off, especially lacking in the social skills. That is who I am referring to.
Long braided hair, white shirt buttoned all the way up, long denim skirt, socks and loafers. I agree with the JH Syndrome rant, but all my single girlfriends seem to think the guys have been the most affected–paralyzed by thinking they can only date “the one”. If you haven’t read Redeeming Love, which it sounds like you probably haven’t, you really should, and I bet you’ll feel differently about it.
